Before we start analyzing Greenland paddles and their advantages, we would like to make it clear that we will express personal opinions, and that each paddler will find what he considers suitable for their personal style and paddling goals. After all, in our community we have ambassadors and trainers of all worlds.

Greenlandic paddles differ from modern Euro/Wing in terms of blade. They do not have the so-called “ladle” or the shaft of the European ones, and it looks like a long one-piece shaft. Their edges are wider and they narrow as they go towards their center. Nowadays their construction material is wood (usually cedar) or carbon fiber. Wooden paddles must be “insulated” from sea water; linoleum is used to substitute Greenland whale fat.
Greenland paddles are gentler to sail and create the initial illusion that they do not have the strength to move the boat. After years or using Greenland paddles in all conditions, from long trips and daily workouts, to trainings, rolls, and surfing in difficult times, we have briefly come to the following conclusions:
– 0.2 to 0.4 knots loss of speed compared to a racing wing
– No strain on the joints, no wonder they are selected by paddlers with prior tendon damage..
– 3 to 5 day uses are required to draw safe conclusions as to their use.
– In rolls and support strokes they are “the king of paddles”, no wonder there have emerged dozens of ways to roll a kayak – participation in the world roll championships is impossible with any other paddle.
– In surf, where the initial blade grip is key, the Greenland paddle is out of league. Of course you can surf, but it takes time. On the contrary, should you need a stern rudder or a low brace turn, the Greenland paddle has the edge.

Beyond what was mentioned, there is something more important that brings Greenland paddles above all else to our liking. The Greenlanders used to say that if you manage to feel that instead of legs you have a boat, then you will turn into a sea lion and instead of fins you will have your paddle.
In short, the undeniable advantage of Greenland is your holistic connection to the boat and the water. Over time, that connection grows, and if you do spend some time on these unique paddles, you might realize what the Greenlanders meant.
